Behavior Modification
For the dogs that keep their humans up at night.
Stress. Anxiety. Aggression.
These aren't routine training problems —
they're behavior
problems.
And they need a
behavior specialist.
Not every great trainer is equipped to do this work. Some trainers specialize in puppies. Others live for dog sports. But a specific, rare kind of trainer dedicates their career to the dogs that lunge at joggers, guard their food bowl, fight with other dogs, or live in a state of constant anxiety.
These dogs don't just need training. They need healing.
That's what behavior modification is — and at AGDT, this work is led by Melissa Arbitman, a certified dog behavior consultant who has spent her career working with some of New York City's most complex, fearful, and reactive dogs.
For most clients, the work becomes something unexpected: not just solving a problem, but rebuilding trust. A chance to understand your dog more deeply, communicate in a new way, and come out the other side with a bond that's stronger than before.
We offer behavior modification throughout Manhattan — in your home, on your block, wherever your dog needs us most.
Is this the right service for you?
Behavior modification is the right fit if your dog is struggling with any of the following: anxiety, fear, reactivity, aggression, resource guarding, hyper-arousal, or biting.
Not sure if your issue is a training issue or a behavior issue?
Join a free Q&A and ask Melissa or one of our trainers directly. That's what they're there for.
Think there might be a medical component — or wondering whether medication could help?
Some behavioral issues have an underlying medical cause, or respond better to training when medication is part of the picture. If that sounds like your dog, consider starting with a Veterinary + Behavior Consultation with Melissa and Dr. Miller together.
Meet Melissa Arbitman
Melissa Arbitman has spent her career working with the dogs most people have given up on.
A lifelong New Yorker, Melissa's path into dog behavior began at fourteen — volunteering with rescue organizations and developing the kind of instinct for troubled dogs that no classroom can fully teach. She went on to formalize that instinct with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Hunter College, followed by specialized training at the San Francisco Academy for Dog Trainers, where she graduated with honors.
What truly sets Melissa apart is the depth of her real-world experience. For seven years, she served as Canine Behavior and Outreach Trainer at Animal Care Centers of New York City — one of the most demanding behavior environments in the country — working daily with fearful, reactive, and dangerous dogs, helping countless animals become adoptable when others had written them off.
She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. She is based on the Upper West Side and works with clients throughout Manhattan.
Melissa lives in New York City with her Pit Bull mix, Pippa.
How it works
All initial consultations are virtual — 30 minutes, $115. This lets Melissa assess your situation fully and prepare for in-person work without creating unnecessary stress for your dog before she's even met them.
From there, Melissa will design a customized plan. Most behavior modification programs involve multiple in-person sessions, often complemented by professional training dog walks. She'll give you a clear picture of what's needed during your consultation.
